Question Help! Pickup or onboard pre, which to change first?? Warwick '98 FNA 5

Hi guys I need some advice on which would do the most for me tone wise when changing one of these components. I have a '98 Warwick FNA 5er with a Duncan basslines pu and i'm assuming an MEC pre since it has MEC pots. Anyway this bass has a lot of upper mids and to tone it back i have to do some drastic eq-uing. I want to install a Bartolini pu and pre since a warrior bass i had a few years back had that and ive never heard anything bartolini sound bad, even when played through cheap amps. I like mids, i know they are needed but want i little more control and rounded sound. Which would benefit me most to change first?
