Highest Signal to noise ratio active system

I like active basses for the ability to make quick on the fly tone changes without having to walk over to my amp, however I am really starting to get frusterated with the noise level of most of the active systems I've tried. Of all the active systems I've used two strike me as the most silent. My Ibanez ATK which was very low output and a Bartolini system I had in an Ibanez SR bass. I also had an EMG set up in my old Spector that was very quite, but that was a boost only system.

I currently have an active warwick corvette and the hiss is killing me. I already double checked all the wiring, changed the battery, and added aditional copper shielding tape in case the conductive paint wasn't enough and while the noise has calmed down, it's still there.

What should I consider upgrading to. Does 18 volt make a difference.

Note: I am also looking for a very smooth modern sounding tone with lots of note definition and I'm on a very tight budget.
