Hiss from Preamp Normal? mim J deluxe

Hi guys,
just bought a used mim deluxe J very nice, however there is an audible hiss that comes from i asume the built in pre is this normal?

How to get rid of hiss from a Made in Mexico Bass….



put a wedge of lime in it….


seriously, now...can you bypass the preamp to see if it IS the preamp?

I guess the only way is to go straight from your pickups to the output...that would require resoldering....


before you go there....what happens when you turn the treble tone knob down? is hiss reduced?

if so, then hiss is probably from pickups and just emphasized by the preamp....


if no, then hiss is coming from preamp...

same thing happens form time to time with my mim delux active jazz....when i touch the bridge, or any othe rmetal on the bod of the bass it stops....probabaly not grounded correctly right? how do i fix this?

there's a huge thread about grounding and shielding on here....

but basically....you're best off to have your pickup cavities shielded, your control cavity shielded, and then have
your pickups, bridge, knobs, jack, and shields properly connected to one common screw in the control cavity...

this is referred to as a "star" ground and ensures that all grounds are references to a common point. It really does help eliminate noise.

Ok this is abit embarassing i noticed the hiss was getting quite bad so i thought hmmm wonder if the battery needs changing? i just bought this bass and it hadn't been changed since new about a year ago so i did and um no more loud hiss just a bit of very faint noise. porblem solved bloody batteries!
