Hissy/crackly noise when turning up tone

Hello,

Just got my first bass today. Went for a cheap Peavey BXP Millenium as a starter. However, when I turn up the tone on the right hand control I introduce a hissy sound. The left control is fine.

I'm guessing this is a fault either with the pickup or the tone pot or is it just because I have been a cheapskate and I got the quality I paid for?

If I'm not mistaken you may be seeing one of these issues.
If it hisses as you turn it up (scratchy) - dirty pot. replace the control.
if it continues to hiss after it is turned up then I think it is probably a shield problem. re-shield with copper. (I use the metal adhesive stuff from Lowes or WalMart).

Thanks. It continues to hiss. As it was brand new and only delivered yesterday I feel sending it back may be better than trying to fix myself as it is not what it should be.
