Homemade 2 band EQ (G&L players?)

Sign in to disble this ad
Could I combine a standard tone control, and a high-pass tone control (Wired in series rather than parallel) to create a 2 band EQ? Or something like that?

You mean like a dual ganged pot that's flat at the center detent, cutting treble in one direction and bass in the other?

Could be, or a bass cut (high pass) knob and a treble cut (low pass) knob, both seperate.

What ever is easiest/sounds better.

Well, you can do this with a blend pot, but you are going to need two different values for the resistive tracks.
For the LPF, you will want 250k or 500k, like a standard tone control, but you'll want something higher to get a good HPF. G&L uses 1M pots for their bass cut controls, IIRC.

I'm also concerned with how well the control will actually adjust. The taper could be weird.

Yeh, I am wondering about the taper. Would it work as a 2-pot configuration?

With two pots, it's just like a G&L bass.

I've never played one.

They commonly feature passive bass and treble cut pots, though.
Perhaps the G&L players can chime in about the usefulness of the controls.

I wanted to do the same thing after converting my active to passive.
I used the wiring diagram from the G&L 1000.
You can search their website for wiring diagrams.
Warning: I used 2 500k pots and it was too dark, so I'm going to order 2 1M and re-do it.

The G&L MFD pickup is very hot and a one off as far as pickups go. I have never tried using the G&L tone circuits on a standard pup. (But own an L-2000 and L-2500 and love them). Grab a few capacitors and see if you can alter the circuit to sound ok with your pickup and pots, especially round the treble cut pot.

Also if you have the .001uF (C3) then try removing it.

Edit - I've just removed all the OT stuff. Well it is Sunday morning.

If you have the circuit as a reference...I left out C2, C3, and R1. And have my blend pot in place of the single pickup.
My understanding is that the caps just blead off some high (which I don't want to do) and I'm not sure why the extra resistor is there.
Anyway, except for the issue I mentioned, it worked very well.
