Question Hot pickup far away vs. weaker pup near

Sign in to disble this ad
i want to know what would be the difference in sound between a overwinded pup placed far the strings vs. a weaker pickup placed closer.

I got a pair of nodymium pups that have a very strong magnetism, so the string pull is high and the tone is very well defined but kinda warmless and edgy/trebly.
If i place them far away, the signal is lost about a half. But i really like this pups except the issues related with huge pull. So i was thinking the idea of order an overwinded pair to place them far away. But i dont know if its a good idea...

Depends entirely on the voiceing of the two pups. Just like low output pups, some high output pups sound better closer to the strings. On my basses I allways use high output pups. Often closer to strings results in better low note difinition and overall sound detail. A crunchy voiced pup will of course sound diff from a smooth voiced one no matter how its positioned. Dont let pup output level determine how far you position it from the strings. Base position on best sound for you.

Some low output pups when placed close to strings have greater detriment to sound then some high output ones placed close to strings. You gotta postion them based on the pup itself and listening.

yep, but my idea is to place far the strings to get less string pull, not to get a different tone. I guess a neodymium pup placed a bit far is the same as traditional ceramic or alnico placed close. But i dont know if overwinding them the clarity is off...
