Hot SX pups-new pups or????

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got an SX SPJ that I really like the tone of, but it keeps clipping out my amp even on lower settings. It's just sending too hot of a signal to the preamp is my guess. I've had the problem with a couple different amps now, so I know it's the bass. I'm not really opposed to getting new pups I guess, but I just had an idea that probably won't work. Is there anyway I could rig up a small circuit to put either right after the pups or right before the output in bass to help take the edge off without really changing the general sound of the bass? I have some basic soldering skills and understand schematics, etc. but I don't really have the knowledge to design the circuit myself. I guess my question is, is it worth it to try to fix what I've got, or should I just get some new hardware?

I may be captain obvious here, but have you tried lowering the pickups?

The SX pickups are a little weird because they have raised polepieces, so when they're adjusted properly the pickups may seem a little low, but they're actually at an appropriate height.

Could always just back off the volume knob too ( I know, I know, blasphemy!)

I've lowered the pups a little, but just because they weren't quite level from the factory. I'll drop them down a little and see if that helps some. The problem with turning the bass down is that I seem to loose that something special that I'm sure no one else is hearing anyways... I don't have my bass right now, but I'll play with it a little this afternoon and update. Thanks!

I also have an SX PJ... i agree with thisSNsucks. Lower the pups a tad more.

Mine are also hot (as i've heard is a common thing for SX in general), and while i lowered them some... on all my basses i never crank the vol to max... it's always rolled off eeeever so slightly. You may want to roll off the tone a tad as well.

I'd try all of this before i splurged on new pups. I actually rather like the stock SX pups...

I lowered the pups till they were flush with the PG. seemed to work without loosing anything volume wise. I'll probably play with the height a little since i lost my anchor for playing finger style. Thanks again!!
