How bad of an idea is this?

I've got a cheapo jazz bass copy. It plays pretty nice, but the stock pickups are terrible. I've already replaced the bridge pickup with a seymour duncan basslines (and am very pleased with it ) but I wanted to do something different with the neck pickup. I could always just slide a p-bass pickup in there, but that's kinda boring, so, would it be a worthwhile winter break project to try and install either a stingray-style or EB3/EB0-style humbucker in the neck position? Or is this a windmill that I should avoid?

Hey, I appreciate the input. That's why I came here before I went and spent some money and time on something!

Hi.

My vote would go for the Dimarzio Model One in stead of the MM. Think Billy Sheehan.

Works really well in my Epi T-Bird:

Go for it. I did the exact same thing to my 83 Ibanez shorty. I yanked the cheapo Jap P pickup from the bridge position and replaced it with a genuine Fender P. Then I routed out [ ] a spot in the neck position and installed a Gibson EB0 pickup. It has a unique sound when blended, that's for sure. I absolutely have fallen in love with the sound of it and it can't be duplicated any other way. I'm currently shuffling my custom basses around a bit and I have installed the EB0 in a different bass with a J pickup in the bridge position. I should know how that sounds in a few weeks after I finish spraying and re-assembling it.

You could put a P pickup in Backwards (upside down) like on my Yamaha.

Haha Some day my mom is going to wake up to find that her Dean Pace's Model One is stuck into a beat-up Dean Z lying on the couch and it's wired in stereo

That'd be fun. Gotta see if my friend is still looking into selling that thing...

A Dark Star pickup would be cool in place of the neck PU.

The MM will probably overpower the J....

Like Kyral210 said, the MM will probably overpower the J. I recommend wiring a volume knob for each pickup.

Are you talking about a central P/J or a true neck pickup? Compared to the EB/Mudbucker pickup placement the normal "front" pickup on a Jazz or P/J is really more central than neck.

I just routed out an EB neck pickup on a precision, and it does indeed sound great blended, but it's virutally unusable on its own. I'm currently blending with a P, but I think it would work nice with a J, or a MM at the bridge.
