I've got a cheapo jazz bass copy. It plays pretty nice, but the stock pickups are terrible. I've already replaced the bridge pickup with a seymour duncan basslines (and am very pleased with it ) but I wanted to do something different with the neck pickup. I could always just slide a p-bass pickup in there, but that's kinda boring, so, would it be a worthwhile winter break project to try and install either a stingray-style or EB3/EB0-style humbucker in the neck position? Or is this a windmill that I should avoid? |

It's short for Music Man.

My vote would go for the Dimarzio Model One in stead of the MM. Think Billy Sheehan.
Works really well in my Epi T-Bird:

I yanked the cheapo Jap P pickup from the bridge position and replaced it with a genuine Fender P. Then I routed out [ ] a spot in the neck position and installed a Gibson EB0 pickup. It has a unique sound when blended, that's for sure. I absolutely have fallen in love with the sound of it and it can't be duplicated any other way. I'm currently shuffling my custom basses around a bit and I have installed the EB0 in a different bass with a J pickup in the bridge position. I should know how that sounds in a few weeks after I finish spraying and re-assembling it.

That'd be fun. Gotta see if my friend is still looking into selling that thing...

| | | | Are you talking about a central P/J or a true neck pickup? Compared to the EB/Mudbucker pickup placement the normal "front" pickup on a Jazz or P/J is really more central than neck.
I just routed out an EB neck pickup on a precision, and it does indeed sound great blended, but it's virutally unusable on its own. I'm currently blending with a P, but I think it would work nice with a J, or a MM at the bridge. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
