How can I get rid of this really annoying noise?

Sign in to disble this ad
First off, I have a Squire J bass. I play finger style, and have somewhat of an "aggressive" attack. Which leads to my problem.

When I play, my string sticks to the pickup and makes a very undesirable noise. The action is okay; I just had the instrument setup.

This is what the noise kinda sounds like (I say kinda because the recording does not do the annoyance justice, lol.)

black tape on the pickups, lower the pickups or lower the poles by stuffing foam under the cover, or raise the action, or stop playing that aggressively

Can't you put some kind of Epoxy over the pickup poles?

Get rid of the vocalist

*rimshot*

put space between pickups and strings. had the same issue with my old pbass, ran with tape and dropped the pickups slightly.

That tone sounds like crap, sorry.

But I don't know what noise you're talking about?
Turn down the distortion perhaps?

lmao that's the clean tone... What you're hearing IS the noise.

And yeah I think I'll put black tape over it... How do I go about lowering my pickups?

it'll mostly be the bass side of the neck pickup that needs to be dropped a little.

Thanks guys; dropping the pickup worked wonders! I didn't even have to cover the pickup poles with anything.
I just need to adjust my playing now; my thumb has nowhere to rest lol.

How far did you drop it? It shouldn't have to be that low.

I pluck the strings pretty hard, but you have to watch the angle you pluck at, otherwise you smack the strings into the pickups, which is what I heard in your clip.

Yeahh I dropped it lower than I needed to, but I like it like that. I added a thumb rest to the pick gaurd anyway.

What ever works, works.

Jimi Hendrix was known to keep his pickups very low.
