How to Control DiMarzio P/J

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got an active Fender P/J with four knobs: volume, blend, bass, and treble. I plan on putting a set of DiMarzio pups in it. The DiMarzios are passive so the bass/treble knobs will be open for interpretation in the new configuration. I'm thinking vol/blend/tone/? or vol/vol/tone/? Regardless of which I choose I still have an open control knob. What should i make it do? In/out of phase is all I can think of

You can use passive pickups for an active bass. Your fender p bass pickup is passive too,you just have an active preamp.

I have the Model P and J DiMarzio pickups in a banger bass i have.

It has a series/parallel for each pickup, and a series/parallel between the pickups, aswell as an in/out of phase switch (push pull pot). And is a vol/vol/tone setup.

What id suggest is vol/vol/tone + a series/parallel switch, to put the pickups in series or parallel with each other, out of all the other options i have, thats the one i use the most

If you want to keep it basic, you could always do vol/vol/tone/tone? (volume and tone for each pickup)

Or, as bassist 4 life points out, probably use them with the active preamp.

How do the pickups sound in series compared to parallel within each pickup. umm... I mean... how does the P sound in series compared to in parallel. Do you leave them on series or parallel?

I usually leave them in parallel when both pickups are in series together, and series when the pickups are in parallel.

But its all just variations.

Switching the pickups between being in series and parallel with each other gives a much greater change in sound than series/parallel on the individual pickup.

Just like any other series/parallel switch, in the series mode, the pickups sound a little bit fuller, have a bit more depth and bass to them.

Its also useful if you want one pickup to be a little bit more dominant sounding (not just volume-wise).

Hmm using them with the preamp would be an easy solution i suppose....maybe too easy though.

Does anyone know if they make concentric pots with a push/pull on the upper pot?
