How difficult or easy would it be to sperate two pickups to two outputs?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all

i tend to run each pickup to separate amps well in principal for max output and to have one clean signal and one effected as i feel/ find when it comes to effects you need at least one/some clean sound to get an over all "better" sound (now this is all in my opinion you see) i tend to use a "sharp" sounding pickup which really shapes the sound then the other pickup has the bass whacked up and fills the sound

basically this applies to my Attitude and to what this thread is about and why i ask is,

I may (am likely) to come into ownership of two 2000 Stingrays one HH and one HS both 4 stringers and i wish to use them in the same way i have always used my basses (i have also played a jazz bass that had two different pickups wired to separate outputs)

(SORRY ABOUT THE HUGE RAMBLE!) =S

so, my question is, how easy/difficult would it be add a second out put for each and to wire neck to output A and bridge to pickup output B??

And roughly what steps would i need to take to do it?

Regards
AC,

Rewiring for dual outputs is very easy on a passive bass, but the problem is apparently these basses are active, which means you have only one preamp available for the two pickups.

You will end up with the preamp only applying to one pickup while the other remains passive unless you either install a second preamp or get a new preamp with dual inputs and outputs.

No, not off hand.

Have you considered building your own?

I would imagine the biggest problem would be finding 25K or 50K B/B taper dual-ganged pots for the EQ. Most dual-ganged pots are of the 250K or 500K A/C taper variety.

It might just be easier (although costlier and a big PITA to wire up and fit in the control cavity) to have two preamps.
You could do separate EQ for each pickup on concentric pots.

Personally, I would just stick to a passive setup in this situation.

Yeah, I have thought about combining two preamps. I know Best Bass Gear sells concentric 50k pots with center detenters. I have also looked at schemantics for building preamps but I have no clue how to read them.

Preamps are fairly simple beasts, mostly resistors and capacitors.

I learned how to read schematics when I was 12 years old by reading electronics books.
If you can't google something up, head down to RadioShack and check out some of their electronics books. Most of them have a guide at the back.

yeah that would be good i'm happy with a single EQ, i'll just use it for the one i will mess with (i mean add effects too etc)

but could you make a Stringray Passive by taking out the pre amp??? that easy?

I've always wanted a Single H passive Stingray

Yes, Stingrays have passive pickups, so you came make them passive if you want.

The problem is whether or not they will sound good.
IIRC, the MusicMan preamp is not transparent. It colors the sound even when flat to impart it's own voice to the pickup.
You might want to look into this, as I have heard people say their Stingrays sounded like crap without the preamp.
Then again, there are plenty of passive basses with MM pickups, so who knows.
