A lot of them use USA pickups, my 62 Jazz RI has USA vintage pickups, so they're pretty equal

I realise this - I've come across quite a few that use USA pickups, and also quite a few that use Jap pickups - of course I'd rather buy a bass off eBay with USA pickups, but I'm interested to hear how people think they compare to the Jap pickups.

Stole the words right outta my mouth.

As for the actual Japanese-made pickups, I figure they'd be pretty much the same as standard MIA pups, maybe very slightly worse or better.

Well my old Japanese ESP 400 series Jazz still has the stock Japanese pickups 20 years later which says a lot for someone like me who likes to mess about with instruments. I don't think one can be as general to say all Japanese pickups are great/terrible, on the same way it would be naieve to say all American pickups are great/terrible; different instruments have different models of pickups, what particular instruments are you looking at, perhaps someone here already has one and can speak with authority.

I've been looking at the 62-RI. Didn't mean to sound rude in that last post, by the way. I realise it could have come off that way

No problem, I didn't take it the wrong way

There are two versions of the 62 RI (both P and J). One, PB62-60 or JB62-66 has Japanese made pickups, the others PB62-78US or JB62-83US has the USA vintage pickups

Edit - the US in the model number means it has US made pickups. To be honest, it wouldn't make that much of a difference to me, but that's just my take on it.

I have a '87 MIJ P bass that has the stock pup's that are not going anywhere. They have the same woody vintage type of tone reissue '62 pup's put out in another P bass I once owned.
