How do I clean my pots?

So lately my pickup blend pot and and Volume pots have been making noise. My EQ pots are still silent. But its a pain in the tookas if I wanna roll on a little more bridge pickup and all I hear is *(#$^%)*(^@#% ... yeah that noise. You know the one. THE ONE DIRTY POTS MAKE! HELP! Thanks a lot.

First, rotate them back and forth a few times to see if the scratch will clear on its own. A lot of times this will simply do it.

If they will not clear, Radio Shack has a can of contact cleaner that you insert the little red tube in the nozzle and spray the slightest, and I mean the ever so slightest bit, into the pot where the wafer sticks out with the terminals on it. Then rotate the shaft back and forth until it clears.

Make sure to wipe off any excess or overspray.

Rotate the p*ss out of them before you spray them. One or two or 10 rotations usually is not enough. Use your finger or a wide rubber band to work them back and forth from stop to stop 50 or 100 times. Don't slam them against the stop repeatedly, however.

Use any cleaner only after trying this, because any cleaner is going to cause some deterioration of the components of the pot. It may be very slight, but it's going to eat up some of the metals as well as the dirt.

What ever you use as a cleaning spray make sure it says SAFE FOR PLASTIC

Home Depot has some deoxit type spray too

Everyone should have a can of Deoxit in their tool box.

It's also great to clean jacks that are having issues.
