i have a p bass, but it sounds nothing like this. this is so warm and punchy and growly. is it the wood or can i get this with some pickups. and wich ones? i will gladely rewind my pickups to acheve this. the amp is supposed to be a fender rumble solidstate cheapo amp, so it cant be the amp. might be the strings? still i think pickups might have a lot to do with it.

help?

Personally, that sounds nothing like I would want in a P-bass (or have)...

for me the ultimate P-bass sound is David Hungate's Boz Skaggs "Silk Degrees" tone...

check it out...

it sounds like it has a lot of gain. Boost the gain, it'll add that nasty distorted tone he has. I get the same distorted "punch" when you turn up the volume on my fender rumble 60... anyway... try some nickel strings for the growl...

i have a tube amp, and as i said, the sound you hear on the video isn't from a tube amp but from a cheapo fender rumble. and if that's what a rumble sounds like crancked, than i'll kill myself for having a several times more expencive amp. so much for my corksniffer rep i guess.

Don't care for that bass too much but that guy can really play. Wish I could play like that :P

BTW I love the sound of the fender rumble amps, not sure if that's gonna get you that tone but they sound great.

The tone he's getting is a combination of pickups, amp, and whatever recording equipment was used. Pickups alone won't get you all the way there.

Shhh, you guys are letting out the secret to perfect tone.
You have to iodize your pickguards in table salt.

Oh, he's always like that. He's just sort of a goof.

I really like the sound of that bass. Wish I could get mine to sound like that...

Ha! Check out the other videos this guy is doing.

The Rickenbacker video: "You can play like 5 different types of music with this one guitar!"

Why did the numbskull put a lapel mic on his guitar strap? Thanks for ensuring your voice fades away every time you turn your head...

Oh yeah, "iodized" pickguard... simply brilliant.

Not defending the goofball but I think he meant 5 diff. tones he was getting by messing with the pickup selector toggle...lol

...and yeah, he's obviously camerafied or stoned

If I had to guess, I'd say SS or other snappy rounds with old worn out pickup magnets. Tho if hes really using a small rumble amp its probably kicking up a fair amount of harmonic distortion adding to the top end too. The bass doesn't really sound warm and growly to me much. I'd describe it as an odd combo of a buttery low end with an edgy top end.

You can somewhat simulate weak old magnets by lowering your current pickups. Then put some zingy strings on there to get some of the high end back. If you end up liking this sound you might want to try an Antiquity P from SD or a fender vintage reissue pickup.
