You want to look at the existing wiring, and write down or even draw a picture of how the old one is currently wired. Then de-solder it, and solder in the new pot exactly the same way.

A mids knob usually means a preamp powered by a battery. So it sounds like in the specific case of your preamp, maximum resistance means maximum mids. The pot is a variable resistor. If it's missing, and the wires are just sitting in space, well it doesn't get much more resistive than that. The problem will go away as soon as you install the pot. Since the original pot is gone, you have two basic choices: One, contact the manufacturer and ask for a wiring diagram. Some manufacturers have those ready to DL on their website. Two, experiment. There are only three solder tabs on that pot, and there are only so many combinations of connections possible, and you won't hurt or break anything by trying it a couple of different ways.

I'd also like to recommend that you NOT take anything back to that repair person if he dismantled the bass, didn't have a pot, and left the bass disassembled. Hopefully you didn't pay him for his lack of service.

I defintely agree.. thats a pretty slack way to treat a customer.. No recommedations to your bandmates/friends for a tech of that scatterbrained mentality.. he doesn't deserve any.

I'll probably be inside of one of my 3-band basses tonight. If I remember I'll snap a photo of how the pot is soldered up and post it.

Oh and I just realized the OP said it was a Fender- they definitely do have the wiring diagram on their site. You just have to hunt for it a bit.

This probably won't be much help because it's the mid pot from an Aguilar OBP-3... but I said I'd post one, so here it is.

The wire colors are Green/Brown, Orange/Violet, Red/Brown
