How do I know what's behind the soapbar case...

I've been trying to find a good HH style bass, trying to match the punchier tone of a Wal ( I dig the sound of HH anything really) and the list seems a bit slim. I just want to know if the twin soapbar pickups are the same punchy sound of MM pickups, just different looking shells, or if they have a sound all their own.
