How do I set the preamp on my Carvin?

I have a Carvin LB75 with active electronics. In the control cavity there is the potentiometer that sets the output of the bass. How do I set this pot? Right now it is "cranked" and I don't get any distortion out of the bass. Should I back it off so the active output is same as when I have it in passive mode?

I believe that's usually what people shoot for- that way if you're sending a signal to a PA/soundman, the signal won't be too hot for his board. Also for the aforementioned potential distortion issue, but if it sounds good cranked, it might not hurt to have it slightly boosted.
