For what you describe here, I'd definitely go with the EMG J set active pickups. You have stated just about exactly what they're good at (and don't worry about the genre, they will do what you're after here in any setting). But as always, see if you can try a bass with these fitted before you spend your cash.
You can always add a pre-amp like an Audere or better still a J-Retro later if you think the bass is worth spending that sort of money on.
