Humbucker replacements for a typical J pickup?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm not so up-to-date anymore on J pickups.

Say I wanted to replace the bridge pickup on a Lakland DJ5 without routing, what are my options?

Presume I want to stick with the same look of typical exposed poles and not the DiMarzio model J look, but I'm keen to hear of any options.

Thanks.

+1 Nordstrands. Lindy Fralins= good too. I quite liked the Seymour Duncan 1/4 lb jazz p-up set I had too. They're available as individual p-ups... bridge or neck.

I actually emailed Nordstrand a couple of days ago to ask what PU they offer that would retrofit my Lakland JO5 (which I assume uses the same PUs as the DJ).

The reply was that the "NJ5F" PUs are the correct fitting PUs for the Laklands. In fact, I believe that you even put the Nordstrands in your existing covers.

I am still undecided. I have an Audere preamp on the way for that bass. Right now, I really love the sound of the bass, so my thoughts are that the Audere will polish it up without altering it very much. As interested as I am in the Nordstands, I am a little worried that it change the character of the bass too much. The Lakland stock PUs sound pretty nice.

Ah, good choice. They have a 5-string version now I see.

Did it sound "heavy"?

I think this or the Rio Grande might work for me. Anyone tried those and the 1.4 Pounder?

I've had the 4-string Nordstrands. Great pickups, but not what I'm looking for in this case. I love the Aeros in the DJ5 in a mix, but for some drum & bass stuff I'm doing I'd like to fill more sonic space. I have a series toggle that helps, but I'm thinking of taking it one step further.

Low Z on an Audere'd J is pretty thick even with single coils... I know - it's a pre - but heck on a J it's cheaper than some pickup set and 10 minutes to install ...

I've got an SD stack (not the hot version) in a wishbass. I like it a lot. Reasonably low self-noise, balanced tone. I believe they make a 5 string version.
