Humming Problem in my 'Wick!

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay Electroncs guys. I've got one for ya!

I picked up a Warwick Streamer Standard cheap. ($200).

Passive, single 'Bucker, Push/Pull Vol for a single coil sound. Basic stuff.

Needed work, so I massaged it back to Playable, and all was well. Accept the input jack would crackle if I moved around at all. So I bought a replacement input, and soldered it in place. It doesn't crackle anymore. But if I touch anything Metal onthe bass, it Hums. I've seen where it STOPS humming if you touch some metal, grounding the bass I'm assuming. But this hums WHEN you touch something. Could the switch be wired backwards?

Look closely, It sounds like the ground wire to the Bridge has come loose. It probably connects directly to the output jack as well.

You can test the bridge ground with a test lead with clips.

Clip one end to the bridge (or any string).

Touch the other end to the output-jack nut or the metal cable plug.

Touch the strings. If it does NOT hum, fix the bridge wire.

If it still hums, something else is wrong.

It WAS wired backwards!

I got home early last night, and wanted to play this light weight beauty, but the HUM when I touched anything Metal drove me crazy. So I de-soldered the input jack, and switched the wires. It was Quiet!

So, I guess the connections from my El-Cheapo-Grande input jack were reversed from the SwitchCraft that was in it. Works good, ground is good, and at a tick under 7 Lbs, this is one bass I can play all night long!

Thanks for the suggestions.
