Hummmmmmmmmm! Active, Vintage, Noisey!

I have 2 older active basses that Hum fairly noticebly. And it's even more noticeable as the Treble goes Up. The basses are an '83 Stingray and a '91 Jazz Plus. Both are Stock.

But the Hum stops whne I touch the Metal knobs on either bass. Both have the Ground Wire under the bridge. Touching the Bridge makes no difference. When I switch the Jazz Plus to Passive Mode the Hum goes away. (Stingray is Active only...)

Does anyone have any suggestions? It's not so bad while I'm playing, but once I stop, it's on the Annoying Side. I can take any pictures you would like to see...

This sounds like some kind of shielding/grounding problem. When there is a need for more shielding touching ground where ever it is should make the hum go away or get less. That means touching EITHER the bridge or the knobs or the jack body should make the hum change. The knobs do that which says your pots (and mounting plate) are grounded. That it doesn't happen with the bridge sort of says that somehow the bridge isn't grounded. I'd check it with a meter. Knobs, jack, shielding, and bridge should all be low ohms and connected together.

But the hum says that you need more shielding somewhere. I don't know how much they have, but often conductive paint doesn't quite work as well as it should. Sometimes pickup cavities or battery cavity isn't shielded. And remember if shielding isn't grounded it isn't shielding!

Sometimes the hum things take a bit of persistence and trial and error, But I've never seen one that eventually you couldn't shield the hum out of it.

Ben is very correct. I've done tons of shielding work over the last few years. I can always get rid of 95% of the noise. I think the toughest basses to quiet down are pre-EB musicmans due to the relatively hot pups and primitive preamps, by todays standards. I use copper tape, and common point grounding as the primary means to eliminating noise. As ben mentioned above continuity is the key to successful shielding. the hardest thing to shield are the pup wires where they go through the body. It can be done but it is challenging. PM me for more info and my phone number, I can help walk you through this.

Mike

Okay! I was afraid that somehow these basses were wired incorrectly. The MM is pre-EB, and is by far the noisier of the 2. I'll PM you Ben. Thanks for your responses.

+1 on something grounding out. That's why when you touch it, the hum stops.
