Hybrid Active-Passive JPJ Setup

Sign in to disble this ad
I have kind of a crazy idea for my next build:
  1. Two separate output jacks
  2. Rear electronics cavity
  3. JPJ picking routing
  4. 1 active EMG-JAX set for the two Jazz routs connected to jack #1 on its own circuit separate from the P pickup
  5. 1 pass Nordstrand P pickup wired on its own circuit to jack #2
I figure this way it's possible to have an active Jazz Bass and an active P Bass all in one. Each set of pickups would have a volume knob that clicks to OFF to make the two sets independent. Of course, one could have both pickup sets going at the same time and use, say, the J-bass signal for the "wet" effects portion of the sound and the passive P-bass pickup for the "dry" signal, then biamp or combine those two channels for something really sick-sounding (and maybe a little strange).

Is this totally insane?

I was thinking of doing the same thing. Anyone know if it would work?

Oh, it'll work. No reason it shouldn't. Whether the results are good musically and practically is less clear.

I guess that's my question too. I was thinking of putting the pbass pickup in the normal position, and in doing so, have to move the jbass neck pickup towards the neck about .75 to 1". Any ideas as to whether this will work well sonically? How close will the jazz bass sound? I'm mostly concerned about getting a GREAT pbass tone, and if the jazz bass tone can pass, I'll be happy.

Most of the Stu Hamm Urge basses have this configuration, and that thing sounds monstrously good. But they're single-jack, not dual-jack.

Are you going to buffer it? That means a high impedance output, that won't combine well with the Js when you play the output in mono mode.

What do you recommend I do instead?

Active Js.

You need the output impedances to match if you have any intention of playing the outputs mono.

Isn't that what you were doing?
