HZ Passive Bass Pickups - opinions please

Sign in to disble this ad
What are your impressions of these passive pickups?

I recently played a LTD bass with EMG Hz's going into a simple treble, Bass, mid preamp.

I thought the upper mids had a rather curious, compressed and slightly flattened quality - but I really liked this.

Anyone agree?

Any opinions?

Any sound clips?

I'm pretty sure I had the same set up on a Schecter C4 I owned. I always liked the tone of the PU's. Not Fender sounding but decent. Those PU's are usually paired up with an EMG active circuit that has dip switches on it to give you 4 different tone curves. You can get a nice growl out of those PU's by changing those switches. The circuit in the C4 might have been only two band, I can't remember.

EMG has the different settings on their website.

I used to have them in a couple basses. I think they can sound awesome in a wide variety of situations, and they are probably the most EQ-friendly pickups I have ever tried. I say: Go for it.

I run EMG HZ's passive in one of my Jazzes.

250k CTS pots and a .1 Orange Drop cap.

Tone at about half is articulate with a tight, punchy bottom.

Snarly when you dig in ...

I had no issues with them - I think they sound good - clean and punchy.

For soap bars I prefer my barts. I had HZ's in a Shecter and thought the highs were rather plastic sounding where as the barts have a crisper, more glass like high end. HZ's sounded great in the low end though, tight and punchy with a solid bottom end (with a touch of bass boost). Schecters typically use 2 band EQ (bass/ treble) with a micro switches in the control panel to re-center the Fz.

I'm actually a fan. They sound better than the 'real' EMGs to me. I had a Spector with them and they really worked.

Well, yes, of course. I'm wondering why they come in for such criticism.

I'm considering setting them in a custom made bass with a John East preamp. I liked that slightly flattened high mid sound.

Anybody know what differenc the active pups make?
