I got a GFS JB Pro Jazz Bass Pickup

After staring at the Guitar Fetish website for about a month, I pulled the trigger.

I ordered a neck position J-pickup and I thought the whole shopping experience was pretty good. If you don't want to read my story, the summary is "do business with them".

I ordered from their website via paypal and got the pickup 3 days later via ups ground. When I received it, I found I was missing the installation screws and although it had a guitar wiring guide included it didn't have a bass wiring guide. A quick email with my order number and within 10 minutes I received a confirmation that my screws were on their way. About 1 hour later I got a very polite, concise and professional email from "Dave" regarding my wiring question and confirmation that the screws did ship out. I was impressed with the Customer Service.

As far as the pickup, the project is not complete at this time but I wired it direct to the jack to test with old spare strings and A-B tested it against my son's stock SX Pirate in neck position (My Yamaha BB414 is at work) and the pickups from GFS are a significant improvement vs the SX. Once I get it finished up over the holidays I'll follow up with a full test vs my stock Yamaha...

Nice to see that they have such good customer service!

I just ordered the MM Pro Plus and bridge from them yesterday, so I'm itching for it to arrive so I can start on my project!

Check the pups at GFS against the illustrations at www.artecsound.com and I predict you'll discover an amazing similarity....................

I'm sure they are wound in the same factory, or at least it's the same Asian parts. Then GFS has them wound to their specs.

Oh, ok... They are all obviously asian made, no doubt about that...

There is a couple of big pickup makers over there, such as WSC. They make pickups for a lot of companies.

I'd bet GFS has their pickups made by the same people that make Artec, if not Artec themselves, which is why the parts look the same.

That doesn't mean they are the same pickups though, but shows where the similarities come from.

The reason I wanted to do this build was to do something with my son and have an instrument that would be a conversation piece with my students.

Build Details:
Body: DR parts Alder Jazz body (Rondo Music)
Neck: Mighty Mite Maple Neck
Bridge Hipshot (Brass) A style, Ultralight Clover Style Tuners with D Tuner
Grounded the bridge. Shielded cavity with copper tape.

Put the pickup in Neck position and wired straight to Jack. This Pickup did not line up with "standard Jazz spacing" bridge I ordered. That said, I will revise this last statement once I double check my bridge alignment with a pro luthier...but close enough is close enough so I will continue.

Installed SPSD on/off switch via Kraigo's advise...thanks man!

Strung up with .105 DR Black Beauties and this set up sounds like absolute friggin' thunder through my Nemesis 210P. P type Tone equal to better than my stock Yamaha BB414 in Neck position....I will be testing again through Markbass rig at my church within the next week and will update from there.

Happy as of now...

Jimbob,

I'm not quite clear on this, but is it an SX bass from Rondo, or parts of an SX? I have an SX Jazz from Rondo and I'm pretty happy with it so far. But eventually I may want to upgrade the pickups on it. I'm waiting on an OLP MusicMan I just bought (being shipped) and I'd read the first thing to change is the pickup.

Reading on TB I saw the link to GFS. Just wondering how much the sound changed on your SX. Mine's stock, only put on Rotosound 66 strings this weekend and LOVE the tone through my Acoustic amp and Bag End cab.

Hey the_hook,
To clarify, I tested the pickup (A/B) against my son's stock sx pirate. The pickup is installed on a project bass I put together. After playing some shows and giving it a thorough test, I think this pickup is an excellent value for the money. Definitely a step up from the stock SX pickups.
