Sign in to disble this ad
I have a fine piece of wood that is100 year old mahogany that came from an old Kimball piano that is going to be my next bass it is going to be a Fender style body with a bolt on neck it to will be from the same wood….

I cannot make up my mine on what pickups to use to bring out the most from this wood.
I will be using a bad ass II or III Bridge.

If it was yours what pickups would you use and why …I am in need of some ideas

well, depends on if you want J's or Soaps. I'd get either nordy's or barts, depends on which ones you like better.

the good thing about pickups is that they can be changed (except the type.)

I would say go for a PJ or an MJ setup for versatility, and if you prefer a certain pickup like Js or Ps then just go with that.

From what you said I would say get a P or PJ setup...

Get a P/J setup with a dualcoil or nordstrand "big singles" type pickup in the bridge... kinda like how the current american deluxe P-basses have right now... That's what i'd do!

Mahogany is a very smooth and warm sounding wood. If you are going with the Mahog. for both the body and neck then I'd suggest pups that are on the bright side such as single coil jazz types or Nordstrands split coil jazz pups or DiMarzio ultra jazz pups. If you've never made a guitar before I'd suggest you practice on some cheap lumberyard wood first before commiting to using the wood you have which is not easily replaced. Also if your mahogany for the neck is not quartersawn wood then you might have to consider inlaying a couple of carbon fibre bars into the neck under the fretboard to achieve the necessary stiffness. I think maple would be a better neck choice myself.
