Question I know nothing of preamps can someone help me?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I bought recently a rogue LX 405 pro. I had for 3 weeks and it is now my number one the thing is awesome. (requires a big setup but totally worth it)

So this is my first bass with a preamp but the preamp is sub-par usable but not amazing.
So can someone point me to a good preamp? and also is it hard to install or is it one of those "a monkey can do it" jobs

Thanks guys!

As far as preamps... you really cant go wrong with any well known brands as they will all likely be worthwhile upgrades for your current bass however if you're looking to enhance the sound of your bass, the best place to look would be the pickups. The main objective of a good preamp should be to make the tone you have more flexible.

Back to preamps, my personal choice would Bartolini. They're relatively cheap, pre-wired, offer great tonal elbowroom, and sound clean.

Preamps aren't that difficult to install if you've had a reasonable amount of experience with electronics and a good soldering technique. I've had both (not an expert, or even a hobbyist, I just have done a few things here any there) and it took me like 3 hours to get my first preamp up and running. It worked perfect for two weeks then one day, right before a gig, I wasn't getting any sound. Took it to a tech and it turns out I didn't do awesome a job as I thought, lol. Moral of the story? If you don't think you can do it, you definitely can't and if you do think you can do it, something still might go wrong, so be careful .

Ah thanks!

But I don't know what type of MM style humbucker mine is (OLP, MM, Lakland) theres so many i have no idea how to determine which one I get.

Also is it possible that some manufacturer makes a single coil and a MM style humbucker together in one pack? you know like they do with P/Js

If it helps here's a pic

Bartolini all the way. They make everything versatile and, well, great. If you have 4 knobs go for the Bartolini 4.6. You'll love the PP mids pot.
And it's all prewired so you'll only have to worry about soldering the pickups and the jack.
Nice footware in the reflection too...
