I need help with J pickup selection

I have an MIM ash jazz bass. The stock pickup do not give me any buzz, not even with the volumes at different levels but the tone is ho-hum.

I'm looking for any input on which pickups to use for replacement.

I'm looking for a good all around tone. I am not looking to go active.

I like to play soul and rock. I also occasionally play with a praise band.
The tone I am looking for is strong in the low end with good punch with out losing the highs, and I am working a bit on learning to slap so that plays into the tone decision also.

I am thinking about both the Dimarzio model Js and more so, the Dimarzio Ultra Jazz.

I'd hate to get rid of my relatively quiet stocks just to inherit buzz from new pickups so I need to get quiet replacements.

I was also thinking about putting a series/parallel switch between the pickups. Would this give me that low P-like growl when needed?

Any help is very much appreciated.

Hello; I just replaced the pick-ups in my Squier P-bass Special with Dimarzios.
Bags of punch with plenty of richness. I put in some good quality pots shielded the bass and paid attention to earthing.
No trace of hum, even at maximum, inches from the amp.

I recommend the Dimarzios, they worked for me.

I've noticed that occasionally MIM Jazzes are shipped with the pickups too low. On mine, I needed to raise the pickups to Fender's recommended height, which is 7/64" (2.8mm) on the bass side and 5/64" (2mm) on the treble side. Mine were 3/16" too low. Raising mine by adding foam strips below them made a huge difference to the tone.

If yours are already set to the correct height, then I don't know what to recommend...

Read the "J" pickups discussion and comparisons sticky at the top of this forum. Most helpful.
