I need a Jazzy sounding P pickup for my Mustang

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I just picked up a really nice '74 Mustang. I can only play short scales due to having only three fretting fingers.
I got a good deal on the mustang becasue it was a re-fin and had been routed for a P type pickup. I have tried three (Two MIJ older P pup's and a vintage Dimarzio P pup) pickups and they all sound pretty decent. I'm looking for a P sized PUP, so I can drop it in without routing, thats going to give more of a Jazz type growl.
Is there such a beast? Or do all P pups sound like a Precision?
I have owned several Precisions including a '69 body with a '69 PUP..also had a bass with a '75 original PUP. I guess I'm not a P type guy.
I love this Mustang and it plays awesome. Its actually even a pretty good slapper. So is there any P sized PUP's with more of a Jazz growl?
Thanks

The jazz growl is a lot about the location of the pickup.

I think Bill Lawrence's P-46 might help if you're looking for clarity, top end, sensitivity and strong fundamental response - traditional Jazz pickups approach this better than traditional P-bass offerings. You would be disappointed with any P-bass pickup if you're looking for the typical Jazz bridge position burp or the both pickups on mid-scooping interaction, but to me, it doesn't sound like you are.

As Poor tom says, the Jazz growl is much about the location of the pickup - the bridge pickup to be more precise. The famous Jaco growl is often achieved on a Jazz by rolling off the neck pickup completely, rolling off some treble on the bridge pickup and picking the strings very close to the bridge pickup.

The pickup on a Precision is really more like the neck pickup on a Jazz, so you can't expect a Jazz bridge pickup sound from a Precision. Another famous Jazz bass sound is with both pickups on full. This gives a slightly mid scooped/out of phase sound which cannot be achieved on a bass with just a single pickup.

However, there are differences in the construction of a Jazz and Precision pickup, for one thing the coil in a Jazz pickup is much taller. This gives the pickup a different frequency response and overall output.

I had a pickup special made for me that essentially was a Jazz pickup in a Precision pickup clothing. I was very happy with the result, even though it didn't make my Precision bass sound exactly like a Jazz. It was built by a fellow Swede that runs a firm called 'Urban Pickups'. He is registered here under this name and can also be reached on grafstrompickups@hotmail.com. He's not very expensive and he has also made other pickups for me and people I know who are all satisfied customers. I don't know of any production pickup from the major brands that incorporates this "Jazz in a P box" concept.

Of course if you want the whole Jazz bass deal in a Precision package you need to shop for an instrument with two pickups like the Special with a Precision neck pickup and a Jazz bridge pickup.

Hi, iīm Urban that has Urban Pickups and i saw this thread and that Mats had mention my pickup that i did for him, so i thought that i post a picture of it! Itīs taller than a regular P pickup and wound to be in the land of a Jazz pickup and as Mats said itīs location and the shape of the P pickup makes it not a exact Jazz pickups sound, but close! If you have any questions, just send a PM or email me at grafstrompickups@hotmail.com, or here in the thread!

I have used Duncan SPB-1's in a couple basses. They have a nice growl to them. They don't cost a bunch, either. I like them a lot.
