I think I need a new preamp

I currently using a Warwick Corvette 4 String Standard. the bass is purely active at the moment because I using a set of EMG Jazz set and Bartonlini preamp.

I think 90% of the tone is coming from the electronic, I have no problem with the EMG pickup but i find it my tone is not that great and it sound bad sometimes. The preamp is a very old and cheap 2 Band bartonlini preamp that was taken out from another bass.

I was thinking if i change the preamp on the warwick, it may make a huge different on the sound.

Have you tried new strings?

Have you tested the bass with a different amplifier?

Is your tone good with another bass, or could it be your technique?

You might also consider that Warwick had things right when they built the bass, and changing it made it worse.
