i too am looking to get that full warm sound

yep. i am trying to get that full, warm, fat sound out of my MIM jazz bass. i can sorty get at it, but with with next to no clarity. i play pop rock type stuff that uses alot of low notes. i usually play in drop C# which sounds terrible with bassy type settings. after reading around i found that maybe some dimarzio pickups would help? if not how do i get that sound i want on the at low frequencies without all the buzzing and humming? is it just my ****** amp?

on an unrelated note (sorta) if i turn my tone dial all the way to other side i get alot of sound from my fingers sliding up and down the strings...suggestions?

Sounds like you may have a crappy amp. What amp set up do you have?

Also, the critics will crucify me for saying this, but.... Try a BBE Sonic Maximizer in your effects loop (assuming you have one). Get the stomp pedal first to see if you like what it does to your tone. Later, you can upgrade to the rack mounted version for more knobs and widgets should you like it. Make sure the pedal is the last one in your pedal chain (if you don't have an effects loop on your amp) if you have other pedals.

The Sonic Maximizer is a quick way to add warmth. I'm sure someone will be quick to respond on how you can get the same effect with an EQ or a more versatile amp and blah blah blah. Their right, however, if you don't have that kind of money to upgrade your entire bass rig... a quick $100 (or less for a used one which are everywhere) will give your tone a more full sound.

Don't get too curious and want to analyze what the thing does... your brain will explode. It basically gives a "fuller" sound by boosting certain frequencies.

my amp is a laney rb7. i got it used along with a bass which i have now substituted for my jazz bass. im pretty new to in depth guitar stuff and bass playing stuff especially and no i dont have any pedal setups. i looked at a review for the sonic maximizer and the response was not positive saying mostly that it just made things worse.

There's some flavor choices available with Sansamp (and other DI) pedals. The most recent Sansamp to climb the 'must have' list is the VT, or VT Deluxe which includes DI. Also, there's a fellow TB'r that is modding the lower priced VT pedal with several mod options.

yeah, sonic maximizers get a bad rep. I've toyed with them and never had any "negative" issues. It's a highly debatable effect and mostly people who don't like them or don't understand them post about them.

I don't have any experience with the VT or VT deluxe pedal Stacatto talks about, but I want one. The standard VT is about $140, so that might also be an option to help you out. I know I'm getting one soon based off all the positive things I hear about them and the videos I've seen off youtube.

If you want a full warm sound and don't like the string noise you get when you turn the tone up, get some flatwound strings. Don't use light guage strings either if you're tuning down to C#! Try some D'addario Chromes out.

To me jazz pups are the worse choice for full fat warm tone. P pups and soapbar pups do that better imo. But yes dimarzio J's are bit warmer sounding then most stock J pups.
