I want my custom bass to sound "mean"

Hey guys, I'm getting in to building custom basses and a great deal of my ideas are in the 6+ string category.

Most of the pickups on these basses you will see are soap bar pick ups now in my experience(which is limited) a good deal of the time soap bar pick ups seem to give me more of a broad spectrum of sounds, which is great, but never that intense mean sound of say a music man 5 or a warwick with j p-ups. I'm talking about a sound like John Myung's tone from Dream Theater's Systematic Chaos to Sober by Tool.

I want to know if there is another avenue like a place to find extended range EBMM pickups or maybe a soapbar/pre-amp combo that will give me sort of the sound im looking for.
