I own two Ibanez basses. An SRX with stock Ibanez pickups and pre and an SR with stock bartoloni mk1s and pre. I love the tone of the SR, it's perfect for me. However the SRX is lacking something. I love the feel of The SRX but it can't fit in the mix like my SR does. I was wondering what preamp and/or pickups would give me a sound like my SR. It is a 5 string bass and I don't want to route the body at all and I would prefer not to have holes drilled for extra knobs.

The pickups are the same size as Emg40 pickups.

Just curious, why do you need the SRX to sound like the SR? Are there times where you need to use the SRX instead of the SR (is the SR a 4 string and you need the low B or something)?

To answer your question, I'm pretty sure Bartolini makes a set of pickups that will fit your SRX. They also make preamps.

Thanks, do you know which of their pickups and preamps sound similar to the Mk1 pickups and preamp? I bought the SRX 2 years ago and last year I bought the SR and I absolutely love the tone it has. However, the strig spacing is really tight and the SRX has the perfect string spacing for me. The SRX is just too weak in the mids I find.

Speaking of SRX pickups/pre, I've learned from TB posts-that quite a few users dime/push the 2 EQ and create problems in the mix.

Alternative: Setting EQ knobs at halfway point, or middle detent. And, make small adjustments from there.

I haven't used bartolini pickups myself, so I don't know.

So it's a feel issue? I get that. The pickups themselves might be okay, you might just want a different preamp.

If you want a 3-band, a few companies make ones with a stacked bass/treble control and a seperate mid control.

Do you think an Aguilar obp3 might work for me? I generally boost the bass on my active eq slightly and then boost the low mids on my amp with the treble and bass flat on the amp.
