Ibanez active 5 string = no output?

Sign in to disble this ad
So my 5 string active ibanez has no string sound output (well borrowed from a mate) It seems to have something to do the with the electronics in it. Any tips on where to get this fixed in Brisbane or how to fix it myself? I am good with electrics, soldering etc, but I don't know anything about guitars.

It did not get a short from an amp. It has had wires soldered together in it before. It was working but the jack was playing up. So I opened it up to try and get to the jack to see what needed to be done to fix it. I then noticed a broken wire going to the control board. I soldered it back on (yes I am sure I put it in the right spot). Then then it would not work. I'm sure something else must have happened as I was playing with the jack.

The cable is working as is the jack. I even tested continuity from the far end of the lead to the internals of the guitar jack. Also, turning the sound control knobs changes the hissing sound in the amp, so something is working. But zero sound from the strings. The wiring in it is all too tight and it pulls on the circuit board. I wonder if the 9V battery with the worn plug shorted internally and damaged something? I cant see any scorch marks. I could not see any more broken wires or dry solder joints.

The pots are very scratchy and noisy. I would expect some sound output if it the pot was dirty?

Any advice on what to do?

Thanks

Try replacing the battery first, then clean the pots. If that doesn't work, you may need to take it to a guitar tech. If that won't work for you, get a good book on guitar maintenance. One place I can recommend is stewmac.com. They have all sorts of good stuff for guitar work. Best of luck to you!

OK I sprayed contact cleaner into the pots and it came good until the contact cleaner dried out. Its one of the twin pots which has 2 knobs on the one shaft.

Where do I go about finding a replacement? Or is there a way to repair/clean it?

Cheers

Thanks for the link. The reason I say its a pot is because I can get it to work each time I spray the suspect pot with contact cleaner. Wouldn't this pretty much prove its the pot?

Hey Swin. All over the place really, mainly on the Northside. I live in Bray Park, go to Redcliffe a lot and work in the City.

Excellent, you are real close to Arties then...

I'd suggest the following; Speak to the guys at Arties Music

Tell them you would like to drop off the bass and have Andy Peacock have a look at it when he's instore...Andy is the QLD rep for Ibanez and is a wizard at getting things done and fixed. If you need any spare pots or circuit boards he is your man.
