Ibanez AFR pickup issue

Sign in to disble this ad
So I got a early 90s Fujigen Ibanez TR for next to nothing and thought I'd give it a whirl. The bass plays quite well and the neck is great. The electronics, however, are seriously lacking. The bass has some odd noise when plugged in, which shouldn't happen with the AFR pickups. Also, the battery drains without being plugged into a cable. Everything appears to be wired correctly, but any advice or tips would be great.

If the battery is draining there's a short somewhere closing the circuit. Check the output jack and the entire length of the hot from the battery. The noise could be anything, but I'd start by guessing the preamp or a bad pot... you might have to go as far as testing each pickup wired straight through to the jack, then add the electronics back into the circuit.

Thanks for the input. I did a little more digging and found that after awhile these AFR pickups fail and create a rumbling sound (which is what I heard). I've since replaced the pickups with a Fender set. The only drawback was that the covers for the P pickup were slightly bigger so I had to get out the old Dremel to widen the route. I got them installed and now I just need to wire them up.
