The bass (a Yamaha RBX270) J pickup has one lead. The replacement has two. Solder the ground lead to a pot?

The single lead is a coaxial cable. There is a shield and a center conductor, just like the cable you plug into the amp.
So yes, solder the ground lead to the back of the pot.

Thanks. I do have another problem. The J pickup output is very low. I don't get that good "pop" when I touch a screwdriver to the poles. I am gonna do it over.
