J pickup problem

Hi everyone.

I've got an older Pedulla with a P-J setup and the Bart pre. The P pickup works fine, but when you start adding or soloing the J pickup, the volume level drops and and lot of hissing occurs. I am wondering what the problem could be. If it is just a simple matter of a bad pickup, that's one thing.

Thoughts? I know once you start diddling with electronics it could be a lot of things, but I'm not so certain it is the pre-amp as that works fine with the P pickup soloed.
