I am partial to Bartolini J's for warm, dark, growly, organic bottom. That is my definition of "best."

I agree that Barts really have that organic vibe to them.

regarding Bartolinis, slightly off topic but related: I suggested to my teacher that I would replace the stock pups on my MIM Fender Jazz with Barts, and he suggested Nordstrands instead. Any comment there?

First I love your user name, thats what the Kids in School call me. The nordstrands will give you a fuller vintage tone, they are one rockin pickup !

Interesting. I've never looked for "bottom" in a J bass, usually it's a strong midrange and high-end character that I look for. I always associate a "bottom" with a P bass or something else along those lines, but then again I always lean on my bridge pickup and turn up the mids and treble. Subjectivity right!

i have NJ4s in my Hwy 1 Jazz, strung with chromes. Pretty heavy bottom, but not very HOT. Sounds great, however.

great pickups and a great price. I use one in the neck of my Geddy Lee body based Franken. I put it in there for specifically giving me the bottom end that I was looking for.

Dimarzio get my vote for more low end sound.

I like it alot on my fender jazz. I even have to roll off the neck pickup when playing live because it give too much low end lol.
I still like it.
