My Lakland DJ5 had been getting a lot of playing time up until recently. I notice that I like it better with certain amps. Mainly...with my Mesa Amps. It sounds great with the Titan, with the Walkabout, etc...However, I've been using my DB750 into my S810 rig recently and I've just been overwhelmed by the tone of my Nordstrand Loaded 55-02 into that rig.
The DJ5 has the looks to kill though. Everyone from other band band's bassists to my own girlfriend proclaim the Black on Black DJ5 the looker of my stable. Where this basses looks can kill, I'm not 100% in love the sound of this bass through my Aggie Rig. I actually have the Nordstrand Single Coil's in this bass right now too. I wasn't happy with the Aeros, so I sold them and picked these up and have been happy with their relative performance. Despite this great upgrade, I just wish it had a bit more versatility. All of my other basses right now are Active and some say it's good to have at least one passive bass. I have an extra control plate for a DJ5 that I modified to be able to fit a J-retro. It's a tight squeeze, but it can be done.
To those of you with a J-retro or those of you who now find it Passe, please chime in and give me advice. I'd especially like to here from Daryl Jones Owners whom have this in their bass.
I can always switch this out with the Audere that's in my PJO5, but I sort of like idea of having a J-Retro inside of a J-bass.
Please give me your 2 cents.

And I'm pleased as punch with the Audere in my Warmoth J. |

Mid sweep is very handy onstage! |

The J-Retro will probably sound pretty good, but you didn't really mention much about the tonal goal you're trying to reach. |

The PJO5 can have the Audere or the J-Retro and I probably will swap between them to see what I like better for the PJO5, but what about the DJ5? I can't fabricate a Audere Plate for the DJ5 because I already fabricated it for the J-retro. |

When the pre is on and set flat, it still boosts the highs and lows a bit so it changes the tone of the bass right out of the gate. You might really dig that. The Audere as you know is a much more subtle preamp. Since you already have one, I would try switching it.

The Audere, by contrast, is the exact opposite. Installed into a passive bass, I couldn't even tell it was there with the controls set flat. I'm not saying either is better or worse, but the Retro's aren't transparent at all IMHO. They are GREAT preamps however if you want an "active" sounding bass that has a bit more oomph right out of the box.
