Does anyone make a standard J sized pickup that sounds like a Soapbar pickup?

Thanks,

What does a soapbar sound like? I'm pretty sure they put several different types of pickups in those casings.

You may be looking for a stacked humbucker or split coil.

Good question; I thought of that as soon as I sent my question.

The sound I'm going for is that of a Sadowsky Modern (with his soapbars). Granted, some of that tone is due to the placement (both pickups rearward towards the bridge) but I'm sure it also has to do with the pickups.

In generic terms I'd say it's an articulate tone with strong upper mids.

SGD's J neobucker was originally wound toward this sonic profile and with David you can probably still ask for that formula.

Pickup placement = if different on your bass, the sound will be different even you find sadowsky soapbars.

Best Is to know Where You are going To place them .
Since modern Sadowsky is so "Backwarded" on placement ,
and assuming your pickups are in a different Position,
I think You would have :

a)Reroute body

b)A custom Job ,to make a pickup that would give you a close sound but in the different position.

So.. i Second +1 "greenboy" on SGD ,

I would discuss with him pickup placement and tone you are after (with examples ,clips or whatever),
and probably he would do the trick on Jazz shaped ones.

I suspect the neodynium would give you a similar clarity You are after.

Not last Sgd offer his handmade pickups at
a price which is at the same range of "commercial " ones,
and far less than other customs.

Try to look for clips on "SGd pickups "site or thread ,
though off course that will give you only a small hint of what they are (as EVERY webclip would ).

actually, it has very MUCH to do with pickup placement.

different pickups will give different resonant peaks, but that can actually be altered quite easily by EQ.

But pickup placement and aperture (sensing area as determined by pickup shape) determines what harmonics are being sensed and to what degree. Much more complex than simple frequency response.

Crazy, I was just thinking about this on the bus earlier. Thought of building a Frankenbass with holes for J's, and was wondering how to get humbuckers in there...awesome Talkbass win!

Many different types of pickups can live under soap-bar shells. True musicmans are wider than a soap-bar, but I've even seen soap-bars wound to do good MM immitations (G&L's anyone?).

Jazz, Split-coil P-bass, Humbucker can all live under a soap-bar housing.

Just depends what you want. They're actually kind of versatile to swap different things in and out for a change, but unfortunately there's a perception to soap-bars of having specific sounds.

Delano Pickups in Germany are supplying the "JSBC's" (jazz sized buckers) for my new 9-string bass.
