Jack replacement - want best quality available

Sign in to disble this ad
My Yamaha BB414 has an input jack like this one available at Guitar Center. Don't know if its the same brand, but it looks like this:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/ProLine-...92-i1170585.gc

The guitar cable does not seem to get a real positive snug fit inside the jack and I see problems ahead. The cable pulls out too easily. I would prefer the old fashioned Switchcraft type jack, but I'd have to rout the hole larger to accept it, plus fit a plate to hold the jack.

My question is, what is the best jack available like the one in the link, that would fit the bass? Are they all similar quality, or is there a really good one?

Hmm, define "pulls out too easy"?.

As long as you are getting a good electrical connection, and the plug stays put under normal use - ie it doesn't fall out under its own weight - then I woud say its tight enough!. In fact, if you catch the lead on something as you are moving about, then you want the lead to pull out easily, because if it doesn't, you'll end up with a busted jack plug, or worse, a busted socket.

If the plug falls out under the weight of the cable, then you should loop your lead through your strap, in fact you should do this anyway - it routes the lead away from you and makes you less likely to stand on it!!.

"Too easily" means that last night at an audition, the plug pulled out of the jack just far enough that I completely lost signal until I pushed it back in.

And I did have the cable looped under the strap. I don't know how the plug pulled out in this case. But I think it would be better to feel a more positive "click" when you push the plug in.

For a direct replacement, use a Switchcraft 152b. Avoid the pacific rim import stuff....

I've got all-parts jacks of that variety in both my TRBs... seem fine to me.

Thanks all! I will look into these suggestions. Probably will go with the Switchcraft.

Check to see if your cable has a ¼ inch or a metric 6.3 mm plug.
I had a cable with a metric end that was loose enough in a standard Switchcraft jack to cutout intermittently when I moved.
