Jazz bass, a Darkstar and ?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm curious what folks use for the bridge pickup with a Darkstar. It doesn't have to be a Jazz, but that's what I have and I'm thinking of getting a Darkstar installed in the neck position. What worked for you in the bridge position and why did you like it?

I've never tried a Darkstar, but I'd imagine another DS would go better than most other pickups. Darkstars are pretty high output so they might drown out other passive pickups.

edit that to ... Dark Star's are extremely hight output and you would need something beastly strong to keep up ... I've only worked with single DS basses. If I were going for a 2 pickup bass using a DS I would probably match with another DS. If not, maybe a G&L MFD humbucker as they are also pretty danged hot. In general I've liked what I got from the G&L L series basses ...

If I were doing another DS equipped bass, I've be aiming at another single with the pickup located rearward between the P & MM positions, poles to the rear. The DS sounds so big, it really doesn't need another pickup for me ... that or it would be the full on hollow body routine with the typical Guild layout. (I shoulda snagged one of those D'Armond Starfire basses when they were cheap...)

Darkstars are pretty hot...if you don't want another Darkstar, a Chi-Sonic in the bridge position would sound killer!

Sorry for the thread jack but has anyone tried a DS in the extreme neck position and a P-bass (high output) in the normal p-bass spot?

I had Mr. Hammon make me a single-magnet version (as opposed to the standard dual magnet one) and it's matched pretty nicely with my pickup palette.
I have a dearmond turbo jet in the bridge position. Sounds killer. They are discontinued, but I might know where you could get one NOS if you're interested.
Here's my bass with sound clips.

EDIT: I forgot that you're planning this for a long-scale jazz. Probably won't match the string spacing in that case. Still, check it out and let me know what you think

What kind of tone do you want from the bridge pickup?

Yea, I saw that thread and that's what got me thinking about what other folks might use.

Sorry, wrong answer. But you do get our home version of the game, and please feel free to enter as often as you like.

I love ignorant folks that presume that you haven't done any research on things.

I'm looking for constructive input from people that have direct experience with the question. I don't have a ton of money to experiment with purchasing various pickups, even used ones advertised here on TB.

Gonna have to think about that one and pin it down. Everything I can think of at the moment sounds vague. BTW, very impressed with your Wal pickup thread.

Thanks. I make a lot of other nice sounding pickups too.

The Wal clone should be out soon BTW.
