Question Jazz Bass p/u Upgrade Recommendations?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an '89 usa jazz bass with EMG's. They've been in there for at least 14 yrs (dont know if that affects anything or not). They do hum quite a bit depending on my angle to the amp, and I feel like the bass is sounding worse by the gig. Trebley and wirey is how I would describe it. Looking to upgrade pickups, but dont know for sure the best way to go. I would like to kill the hum and have the tone be as modern, crisp and clear as possible. More meat, with clear highs. I slap and palm mute with my thumb alot but also do the 16th jacoish thing. Considering Bartolini's but mainly because I played a lakland 4/94 with them in it. Don't know if thats the right direction or if I would just be able to connect any p/u to the EMG board already in the bass without problems? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Colin

I just put a new set of Nordstrands in my USA Jazz and I love them! I play mostly fingerstyle, but do slap some. They are way "Meatier" than my stock pups and I really like the sound of the high end, especially slapping. They don't sound "twingy" if that makes sense to you. They sound clean, clear and responsive. Really what I was looking for. I used the NJ4's which aren't hum canceling. There is a NJ4SV hum canceling set on TB.
FS: Nordstrand NJ4SV Split Coil Pickup Set

Good luck!
