jazz bass pickup height q

i recently replaced the pickups in my jazz bass with nordstrand nj4sv's and i can't get them balanced. i had these pickups in my previous jazz and loved them because the neck pickup solo'd was fat but quiet and the two combined gave the classic jazz bass sound but at the same volume as the neck solo'ed. with my new install, there's only a slight difference in the tone. i'm assuming the pickup height could be a large contributor to the problem. any advice? thanks!
