Jazz Bass Pickup Options - NEED ADVICE!

Sign in to disble this ad
I am thinking about building myself a hot little jazz bass with Warmoth parts, and I was wondering what people's opinions are regarding the possibility of a J-pickup at the bridge and a P-pickup at the neck. I really want some good low thump, but don't want to be muddy, and I also like the idea of being able to roll off the P for some good high solo tone. Anyone out there have experience with or opinions on setups like this? Thanks!

a J/P?

Isn't that rather like a Lakland? Why not take *that* approach... Have them route a MM slot in the bridge, a J slot in the neck?

I've done the P-thing in the bridge position and was not satisfied with the result...

Of course, the traditional P/J setup is one of the best sounds you'll get out of a bass...

Steve: Thanks, I actually checked that thread already and it has a lot of great info ... almost too much Was hoping to avoid scouring 17 pages of posts to get the info I wanted, but nothing good ever came easy. Am very excited about the reviews of all those J-pups.

Harry: I think you flipped around what I had said. P-pup at the neck and J-pup at the bridge is I believe what you referred to at the end of your post and is exactly what I'm thinking of doing. Best sound I could get out of a bass? Tell me more!

That's a truck-load of J p'up info.

I've never believed in the concept of "too much info" when it comes to things technical.

That thread has caused a lot of wear on my Mule J ... and my wallet.
