Question Jazz bass pickup in a stingray?

Sign in to disble this ad
I posted a thread earlier on how let down i was about owning a EB/MM stingray, the d and g string didnt seem to cut through like the e and a strings and chords got washed out in the mix. i was wondering, would adding a standard jazz bass pickup to the neck/mid position add a bit more mids and "umph" to the sound? My guess is that it would, but has anyone done this before? any schematics available?

Also, I saw on here that the pickups are wired in parallel, anyone tried them in series?

Sounds like you want a Lakland 55-02.

Haven't tried a J, but I do have a Nordy 'big single' on order to add to my SR5. I'll also be replacing the preamp (probably Aguilar) and altho I would like to keep the stock Alnico pup, I'm not afraid to switch that one out too. Whatever it takes, right?

The Lakland 55-02 would be a nice choice... in my experience, the 55-02 doesn't have the same bite as the SR4, but it comes damn close.

Well i cant really afford the Lakland, I already have the pickup and routing would be close to free. The only thing i'm worried about is the wiring.

Stingrays are now offered in J-MM config (called SH in their jargon). You can try one and see it for yourself.

Try a Different Amp

What are you playing the Stingray through? I have a Stingray and it has NEVER had a problem cutting. JMHO, but I would not mod the Stingray. If it's not for you, sell/trade and find something that is. I also happen to own a 55-02 and it too cuts like a knife.

Stingrays are great basses and not many people would buy one that is modded unless it is the exact thing they would have done for themselves.

Just my .02 cents...

Yeah, really. If you own an single-H already, it makes more sense to sell it and get a new H/S or H/H rather than routing the single H, which will be worth a lot less after the mods.

About series and parallel, Sterlings and SR5, for example, can be swtiched from series to parallel, and I always use them in series, which gives you more mids and a more agressive sound that cuts through the mix a lot better than parallel.

The stingray is going through an ampeg svt classic head, Hartke vx410 cab and peavey scorpion 15" vented speaker cab. I dont know if i'm going to go about doing it though, I've read some threads that had some pretty good, non-invasive measures of making the strings sound more balanced. I'm interested though in this whole parallel/series switching. I think the SR4 comes parallel, Is there any way to install a switch to go between the two?

Maybe try some eq boost, say around 800-900hz.
