Jazz Bass PUP/Wiring/Preamp Questions

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay, so I'm trying my hand at building a bass. I've always wanted to do it, and the problems I've had with my VM Jazz has given me the impetus to do it now.

Anyway, my question is mostly about wiring and the necessity for a preamp. Ultimately, I'll be using Fender Custom 60s pickups. I've seen the prewired control plates listed for use with USA & MIM Jazz basses. Is that all I'd need for these pickups? Should I be considering a preamp as well, or is that not needed with the better quality pups?

I'm sure I'll have more questions as I go along, but this is where I'm stuck right now. Here's an example of the ebay listing I'm looking at for the prewired plate:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Fender-USA-MIM-J...item483cf51810

Any advice is greatly appreciated. I'll be documenting the build and posting as I go along. Right now I'm just gathering parts.

Thanks.

You could use that . You don't NEED a preamp with most pickups.

Don't let this stop your progress, you can always add a preamp module (they come as a harness fully wired, too) later if you decide you need one for some sound you're looking for.... should just be able to swap out the plate and re-attach the pickup and bridge ground wires.
