Just got a Peavey T-20 and need advice on noise!

I just got it today and bought it knowing that it would need some work. When I have it plugged in a Yamaha NE-1, it hums and if I touch the cord jack at the guitar end the noise will subside by 60%. If I plug in any other bass then I don't get this hum. Any ideas? The tone pot is noisy and I had plans on replacing both pots.

FWIW:

I have no idea what pups are in that bass.

But the NE-1 just clutters and complicates the chain if you're trying to isolate a problem to a bass and should be removed cause it serves no useful purpose for trouble shooting.

Assuming you get the same response with the basses, cord, and amp without the NE-1; the issue is probably in the noisy bass - although it may be something peculiar in the combination of the bass in question and the amp or cord being used.

If you wire each pup straight to the jack one at a time you'll know if it's the controls or pickups/jack that's creating the noise - if you've verified the ground to the bridge is good (which should be the first step if you've got a meter to do a continuity check from jack to bridge).
