Karl Alvarez' Tone from Non-MM Bass?

Look Ma- I'm trolling! But this is an edited re-post of a thread in Strings, which was an edited re-post of a first thread in P'ups: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6424694#post6424694

So please pardon my repeats- I'm checking all of 'em, so no worry about which one to answer! Sorry for the confusion, I'm just trying to cover all the aspects. Mods feel free to delete, redirect, whatever...

I've been listening to the Descendents CD "Everything Sucks", and the tone of Alvarez' MM Stingray is just the thing I'd like to be able to get out of my bass. I have a Peavey Dyna-Bass Unity, and it's a Poplar body (wings) with a Maple neck and Ebony 'board. I love the play of my bass, so I don't think I need to go selling and looking and all that business. I just want to refine what I have here.

I'm thinking that possibly a Nord MM replacement for a p'up (the Peavey now has stock Peavey PJs) could be the thing.

Now, I also have an Ibanez Roadstar that I've converted to a fancier-looking Ibanez Roadstar... here:

It occurs to me to drop a MM into the 'Sweet-Spot' that the DiMarzio (2-conductor) is now sitting. The DiMarzio does get a nice low-mid wallop- but not enough growl... Just thought I'd go ahead and complicate this further.

More on this, anyone? Thanks!
