Knobs/switches on Conklin 7 string.

Sign in to disble this ad
I just blew my tax refund on a used Conklin Bill Dickens signature 7 string bass!

The only problem is that it's covered with knobs and switches and there seems to be no information anywhere (including online) as to what they all do!

Does anybody here have a diagram or a link to a source of such information? I am especially interested in what the trimpots do inside the cavity.

Present mysteries:

1. toggle switch (3-pos doesn't match instrument description)

2. Rotatary switch (4 position also doesn't match instrument description)

3. Pull-up bass knob. (not mentioned anywhere!)

4. trimpots in cavity. (Mentioned but not defined).

Google is your friend.

I never could find any information on mine when I owned it either, and I had such a hard time dialing my desired tone. Had I found this picture, it would have greatly helped.

Hey, Google is my friend, MY BUTT! I fine-toothed Google for hours and came up empty! Only TB has the depth of the truly cool and knowledgeable people to actually solve the information shortage!

YES!!!!!! This drawing is it! It's got the secrets all right there for the asking! I LOVE this thing. Which only raises the issue of why Conklin doesn't have this (and all other stuff for their basses) on their website? What? A couple of grand for a bass doesn't give them enough profit to be able to put a couple of files on their server? Feh!

Hey, man. This is EXCELLENT. And having Googled, I can tell you that Unlike the cheese I do not stand alone. There were others moaning about trying to find this information all over the net. TB rocks!

And speaking of rocks...just a word to say that this bass is just blowing me away. Of course I'm still a noob on the F string and find it hard to integrate onto playing yet, but jeeze I LOVE the tone of this bass. The neck is not unplayably wider than my 6ers. And even with missing information I was still able to dial in some amazing tone out of this beast. I think I'm in love!

Thanks again!

I actually lucked out finding it. I typed in "Conklin GTBD-7" and it was the first suggested image search. I never would have thought about looking for an image.

I believe that Conklin has since pulled this information from their website because, IIRC, the GT series is out of production.

The neck is about the best neck I've ever felt on an ERB, and if that's what a Conklin normally feels like, I may have to get a real bass from Bill.

You're welcome, dear sir. Enjoy.

I never thought of an IMAGE search! Good going!

Well if you see Bill grab him by the shoulders and give him a good shaking! The reason you put this stuff on your website is BECAUSE it's out of production! If he's having trouble with the concept direct him to the Fender site.

You are absolutely right about the neck. I love the feel of it. (I had a minor problem with one high fret due to the super low slapping action the previous owner had on it, but was easily fixed and then I raised the action a bit more to my liking) I always prefer a neck-though because of the easy access it gives you to high frets. This neck feels SO good up there! And the best part is the neck is only part of the story. The tone still floors me. This is hands down the most "modern" sounding bass I've played. And yet you can get a tonal range from deep thumpy to high clangy slap tones. As real basses go this one sets the standard for me. I love it.

And thanks again!

You're welcome.

If you ever feel like selling the preamp, hit me up. It'd make a wonderful addition to some bass in my collection.
