Kustom Bass wiring question

Sign in to disble this ad
Reconditioning an old Kustom bass and dealing with replacing some of the wiring, pots and so forth.

I have poured over many online schematics and haven't really seen anything that directly compares to the apparently stock arrangement. Two pickups, two volume and two tone knobs, three way switch. Between both sets of volume and tone pots there is a capacitor bridging the center posts... Orange thing reading 223PW .1 @ 10% 100 DC.

This is different than the typical setup I have found in schematics where the cap is posted as a loop on the tone pot.

I have reason to believe that the bridge tone pot is shot, but need to get the wiring together to test it all out.

Sooooooo:

If I get to the point of replacing any of these pots, do I keep the stock arrangement, or go with the more familiar?

or

In another scenario, will switching out any single pot mess with the stock arrangement?

Thanks

For those interested, the bass I am working with looks very much like this one posted by Skipsinclair, but with a black pickguard:

With the cap going between the wipers of the 2 pots - it means that the tone pot goes to ground directly. The cap can be on the input or output, it makes no difference.

Well, the only down side I see to the 2+2 is that
1 - There is one more knob to adjust
2 - I am not sure how the 2 tone controls do not affect each other in a passive bass. It would seem if you turn one all the way down when both pups are on, it will kill the high end from both pups.

Replacing any of the pots in such a setup with the same type of pot won't affect anything.

If you change to a standard VVT setup, you will have an extra hole, yes?

Yeah, it would, but it wouldn't matter too much really, other than classic aestetics. The pickguard is a mess as it is. The input jack took some weird twist looong ago, and the hole around that area is twice the size it should be. Over the years it has resulted in shortages and now total disconnect. I am looking at replacing the jack and stabilizing that part of the pickguard. Also looking at replacing the three way switch as it is messing with the integrity of the plastic in that area too.

You could copy Les Paul wiring if you wanted to keep the same configuration with new parts. Different caps, probably. That looks like a very cool bass.
